Japanese Prime Minister Announces Early Dissolution of the Lower House of Parliament
These elections, which will take place on February 8, will be the second snap elections in a year and a half. The dissolution of the deputies will occur on January 23.
Sanae Takichi and her team hope that her popularity as the first woman to hold the office of Prime Minister of Japan will aid in the upcoming elections.
The Prime Minister emphasized that the decision regarding the choice of the head of government should be "up to the people," which serves as the main argument for the dissolution of parliament.
It is worth noting that Sanae Takichi assumed the position of Prime Minister in the fall of 2025 as a result of a parliamentary vote, rather than in a general election, following the resignation of Shigeru Ishiba.
Thus, she aims to obtain a popular mandate to implement her program, which includes a more active defense policy, increased government spending, and investments to stimulate economic growth, enhance tax revenues, and stabilize the budget.
