Annexation of Greenland. Trump imposes tariffs on eight European countries starting February 1.

Starting February 1, 2024, Donald Trump announced the introduction of additional tariffs for the United Kingdom, Denmark, and other European countries due to ongoing disagreements regarding Greenland. He shared this information in his post on the Truth Social platform.
According to the U.S. president, the tariffs will remain in effect until a "complete and absolute agreement" is reached regarding the purchase of Greenland by the United States.
A 10% tariff will be imposed on all goods shipped from Denmark, Norway, Sweden, France, Germany, the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, and Finland, and starting June 1, this tax will increase to 25%.
"China and Russia are eager to take control of Greenland, and Denmark is unable to do anything about it. Currently, they have only two dog sleds for protection. Only under President Trump's leadership can the United States successfully participate in this game! No one will be able to touch this sacred place, especially considering that the national security of our country and the entire world is at stake," Trump noted.
He also emphasized that Denmark, Norway, Sweden, France, Germany, the United Kingdom, the Netherlands, and Finland "came to Greenland with unclear intentions" and are playing an "extremely risky game."
"Decisive action must be taken to ensure that this potentially threatening situation is resolved quickly and without unnecessary questions," he added.
In response to Trump's initiative, protests took place in Denmark and on the island itself.
It is worth noting that a bill regarding the "annexation of Greenland and granting it state status" is already under consideration in the U.S. Congress. The explanation for this document states that it will allow the president to take "any necessary measures" to acquire Greenland as part of U.S. territory.
Previously, Trump claimed that the U.S. would "somehow" gain control over Greenland. During his first presidential term, he proposed buying the island, and in March 2025, he expressed confidence in the possibility of its annexation, threatening Copenhagen with trade tariffs in case of refusal.
Greenland is an autonomous territory within Denmark. In 1951, Washington and Copenhagen signed a Treaty for the Protection of the Island, which complements NATO obligations and commits the U.S. to defend Greenland against potential aggression.
