Annexation of Greenland. Trump threatened European countries with tariffs

US President Donald Trump, in his recent statement, referred to himself as the "king of tariffs" and announced the possibility of imposing tariffs against countries that do not support his ambitious plans for Greenland. "Greenland is essential for our national security, and I can impose tariffs on those who disagree with this position," he emphasized at the White House.

During his speech, Trump also recalled how he used tariffs to compel other countries to cooperate on lowering drug prices in the US. He noted that he has done a "great job" in this regard.

These words came against the backdrop of some of the US's NATO allies sending their troops to Greenland, highlighting the growing tension around the island.

It is worth mentioning that a bill concerning the "annexation of Greenland and granting it state status" is already being considered in Congress. This document allows the president to take "any necessary measures" to make Greenland a part of the US.

Trump has previously also stated that the United States will "one way or another" establish control over Greenland. During his first term, he even proposed buying it, and in March 2025, he expressed confidence that the possibility of annexation is real, threatening Copenhagen with trade tariffs in case of refusal.

Greenland, being an autonomous territory of Denmark, has a special status. In 1951, Denmark and the US signed a Treaty for the protection of the island, under which the US committed to its defense against potential threats.
