Annexation of Greenland. Mass protests took place in Denmark

Annexation of Greenland. Mass protests took place in Denmark
Recent protests have swept through Denmark and Greenland in response to the intentions of the U.S. president to annex the island. According to TV2, thousands of people took to the streets of Copenhagen and Nuuk.

Protesters, including both Danes and Greenlanders, expressed their dissatisfaction by holding signs that read "Hands off Greenland" and flags of the island.

Greenland's Prime Minister Jens-Frederik Nielsen also attended the rallies, showing his support for the action.

Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen noted on her Instagram: "Today many chose to spend their Saturday participating in demonstrations in support of Greenland. The flags of Greenland and Denmark stand together — it is truly inspiring."
It is important to note that a bill on the "annexation of Greenland and granting it state status" has already been introduced in the U.S. Congress. The explanation of the document states that it gives the president the authority to take "necessary steps" to acquire Greenland.

Donald Trump previously claimed that the U.S. would "one way or another" gain control over Greenland. During his first presidential term, he proposed to purchase the island and in March 2025 mentioned the possibility of its annexation, threatening Copenhagen with trade sanctions in case of refusal.

Greenland is part of Denmark as an autonomous territory. In 1951, a Treaty for the protection of the island was signed between Washington and Copenhagen, under which the U.S. committed to protect Greenland from potential threats.
