Annexation of Greenland. Seven European countries have sent troops to the island.

In the context of escalating tensions surrounding Greenland, Germany, Sweden, France, the Netherlands, Canada, Denmark, and Norway have decided to send their military personnel to the island. This is reported by Politico.
This decision is a response to the increasing pressure from the United States, which claims rights to the island, as well as threats from President Donald Trump.

According to the publication, the Bundeswehr has sent 13 military personnel to Nuuk, the capital of Greenland. The German Ministry of Defense clarifies that the purpose of this move is to "explore the possibility of participating in ensuring Denmark's security in the region, including in maritime surveillance."

Norway will also send two of its military personnel to Greenland, as confirmed by a representative of the country's military department.

It should be noted that a bill concerning the "annexation of Greenland and granting it state status" is currently being considered in the U.S. Congress. The explanation for this document states that it gives the American president the right to "take any necessary actions" to acquire the island.

Previously, Donald Trump stated that the U.S. would "somehow" achieve control over Greenland. During his first presidential term, he expressed the idea of purchasing the island, and in March 2025, he expressed confidence in the possibility of its annexation, threatening Copenhagen with the imposition of trade tariffs in case of refusal.

Greenland is an autonomous territory within the Kingdom of Denmark. In 1951, Washington and Copenhagen signed an agreement under which the U.S. committed to protecting the island from potential aggression, in addition to its allied obligations within NATO.
