According to the source, the United Kingdom is negotiating with European allies about the potential deployment of NATO in Greenland. This issue was discussed at a meeting of alliance countries that took place on January 8 in Brussels.
As The Telegraph points out, the participants of the meeting tasked NATO's main command in Europe with considering various options for ensuring security in the Arctic region.
Additionally, the European Union is developing potential sanctions against American companies if Donald Trump rejects the proposal to station NATO troops. Major firms such as Meta, Google, Microsoft, X, as well as U.S. banks and financial institutions, could be subject to these possible restrictions.
It is worth noting that Donald Trump has repeatedly spoken about the necessity of Greenland joining the United States. During his first presidential term, he suggested buying the island, and in March 2025, he claimed that it could be annexed, threatening Copenhagen with the imposition of trade tariffs in case of refusal.
Greenland is an autonomous territory of Denmark. In 1951, the U.S. and Denmark signed a Treaty for the Defense of Greenland, under which America committed to defending the island against possible aggression.
