Marat Tagaev: Starting from 2026, state films and series will be monetized

In response to a deputy's inquiry about the return on investment in state film production and the state of film distribution in Kyrgyzstan, Deputy Minister of Culture, Information, Sports, and Youth Policy Marat Tagaev provided details in the Jogorku Kenesh.

According to the deputy minister, previously, films produced by the "Kyrgyzfilm" and "Kyrgyzserial" studios were primarily educational and artistic in nature.

“The projects produced by our state studios did not have a commercial component. They were high art that typically did not attract a mass audience and did not generate significant box office revenues. Nevertheless, we are currently rethinking our strategy,” explained Marat Tagaev.

The deputy minister added that the successful experience of the private film sector in Kyrgyzstan, which generates significant income, has prompted changes. Starting from 2026, state projects are expected to begin generating revenue.

A new direction dedicated to the production of audience-oriented films will be established within the structure of "Kyrgyzfilm." It is anticipated that the state will annually finance the creation of 2-3 commercial films aimed at wide release with the possibility of return on investment. All films and series created under state orders will be adapted to market conditions to ensure profitability.
