It has begun. A bill on the annexation of Greenland has been introduced in the U.S. Congress.
The bill was initiated by Congressman Randy Fine, who noted that control over Greenland allows for management of crucial Arctic routes and strengthens the security of the United States. He emphasized that the U.S. should not leave Greenland's fate "in the hands of regimes" that ignore American values and threaten the country's security.
The bill provides the U.S. president with the ability to take "necessary steps" to acquire Greenland as a territory. Additionally, Congress will need to receive a full report on the legislative changes required to complete the process of incorporating Greenland into the United States.
Previously, former President Donald Trump expressed the opinion that the U.S. would "somehow" gain control over Greenland. During his first term, he proposed buying the island, and in March 2025, he mentioned the possibility of its annexation, threatening Copenhagen with trade tariffs in case of refusal.
Greenland is an autonomous territory within the Kingdom of Denmark. In 1951, Washington and Copenhagen signed a Treaty for the Protection of Greenland, which further solidifies commitments to defend the island against potential threats.
