Greenland Politicians Demand the US Stop Neglecting the Island
In the document published on the official government website, Jens Frederik Nielsen (Democrats Party), Pele Bruberg (Lighthouse), Mute Egede (People's Community), Aleka Hammond (Forward), and Akakalu Yerimiassen (Solidarity) urged Washington to stop its "disrespectful" attitude towards Greenland.
“We do not wish to become Americans or Danes; we strive to be Greenlanders. As representatives of Greenlandic parties, we want to reiterate that the disregard from the U.S. towards our territory must end,” the statement reads.
The authors of the document also noted that Greenland is a democracy that intends to continue cooperation both with the U.S. and other Western countries.
It is worth recalling that Donald Trump had previously expressed the need for Greenland to join the U.S. During his first presidential term, he proposed to buy the island, and in March 2025, he suggested that Greenland could be annexed, threatening Copenhagen with the imposition of tariffs in case of refusal.
Greenland is an autonomous territory of Denmark. In 1951, Washington and Copenhagen signed a Treaty for the Protection of Greenland, which, in addition to NATO obligations, established the U.S. responsibility to protect the island from potential threats.
