Annexation of Greenland. The Foreign Minister broke down in tears during the interview
Vivian Motzfeldt, who participated in the negotiations alongside Danish Foreign Minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen, expressed her emotions on air after the parties failed to reach an agreement with the United States regarding the future of the island. She was overwhelmed with emotions when she connected with KNR.

“These days have been extremely difficult. Despite all our efforts, the pressure on us is only increasing. We are trying to do everything possible to ensure the safety of the residents of Greenland,” she said, unable to hold back tears.
Vivian noted that “for the past year, there has been growing pressure on Greenland,” which causes fear and uncertainty among the local population.
Recently, Denmark and Greenland held negotiations with representatives from the United States but did not reach a consensus on issues concerning the future of the island.
“We were unable to change the position of the American side. The President is clearly interested in acquiring Greenland,” said Lars Løkke Rasmussen, commenting on the outcomes of meetings with Secretary of State Marco Rubio and Vice President J.D. Vance.
As a result, it was decided to create a working group between the United States and Denmark to discuss various issues related to the fate of Greenland. The ministers characterized the negotiations as “frank, yet constructive.”
It should be noted that the positions of Denmark and the United States on the issue of Greenland differ significantly. The head of the Danish Foreign Ministry called the demands for the transfer of the island to the U.S. completely unacceptable.
Let us recall that a bill on the “annexation of Greenland and granting it state status” has already been introduced in Congress, which would allow the U.S. President to take “necessary steps” to gain control over the island.
Earlier, Donald Trump stated that the U.S. would “in any case” gain control over Greenland. During his first presidential term, he had already expressed an intention to purchase the island, and in March 2025, he noted that it could be annexed, threatening Copenhagen with the imposition of trade tariffs.
Greenland is an autonomous territory within Denmark. In 1951, Washington and Copenhagen signed a Treaty for the protection of the island, under which the U.S. committed to defend Greenland against potential threats.
