Ten Minutes of Training — A Powerful Weapon Against Cancer

According to a new study conducted by Newcastle University, it has been found that even a short, just 10-minute, session of intense physical exercise can change blood composition, which in turn helps slow the development of colorectal cancer and aids in the repair of damaged DNA.

During intense physical activity, specific molecules are released into the blood that can reduce the level of inflammatory processes, improve vascular health, and optimize metabolism.

When researchers analyzed colorectal cancer cells using blood taken from individuals after exercise, they recorded significant changes: the activity of over 1300 genes was altered. Among them were genes responsible for DNA repair, energy metabolism, and tumor growth.

Dr. Sam Orange, who leads the study, noted: “It’s amazing, but exercise affects not only healthy tissues. It sends powerful signals through the bloodstream that have a direct impact on thousands of cancer cell genes.”

What happens in the body during exercise

  • Physical activity activates several protective mechanisms:

  • Improvement of energy metabolism. Cells become more efficient at using oxygen, which helps strengthen healthy tissues.

  • Slowing down the division of cancer cells. Genes responsible for accelerated tumor growth are suppressed, making cancer less aggressive.

  • Initiation of the DNA repair process. The protein interleukin-6 (IL-6) and the PNKP gene play an important role here, helping to correct damage in the genetic material of cells.

The study involved 30 participants aged 50 to 78 years who were overweight or obese—factors that increase the risk of cancer development. All participants underwent an intense 10-minute workout on a stationary bike.

Blood analysis before and after exercise showed that the levels of 13 key proteins increased, including those involved in combating cancer cells.

Dr. Orange, a clinical physiologist at the NHS, emphasizes: “Even one workout can change the situation. Just 10 minutes can send powerful protective signals to the body. This indicates that every step, every session matters for your health.”

According to statistics, regular physical activity reduces the risk of colorectal cancer by 20%. It is not necessary to work out in a gym—walking, cycling, gardening, or even house cleaning is sufficient.

Colorectal cancer is the fourth most common disease in the UK. Every 12 minutes, this diagnosis is made in the country—nearly 44,000 cases per year. Every half hour, one patient dies from the disease.
