In the night, a military transport aircraft Hercules, belonging to the Danish army, landed at the civilian airport of Nuuk, the capital of Greenland. According to Bild, on board were not only Danish military personnel but also representatives from France.
The exercises, which will take place from January 15 to 17, are organized as part of the "Arctic Resilience" operation at Denmark's request. The main task of the military personnel is to conduct reconnaissance operations and analyze opportunities to enhance security in this region. It is expected that the first 13 soldiers from the German reconnaissance group will arrive in Greenland today. As Bild specifies, the coordination of the operation is being carried out from Copenhagen, not through NATO, and the United States is not participating.
Danish Foreign Minister Lars Løkke Rasmussen stated that the country has not been able to convince the United States to abandon the idea of acquiring Greenland. This statement was made after his talks with Secretary of State Marco Rubio and U.S. Vice President J.D. Vance. Nevertheless, Copenhagen expressed its readiness to discuss any security-related issues concerning the island that may arise for Washington.
Previously, U.S. President Donald Trump repeatedly raised the issue of control over Greenland, citing national security considerations, and on Wednesday expressed his intentions to protect the island from the influence of Russia and China. At the same time, Denmark and the authorities of Greenland emphasize that discussions about the island's annexation to the U.S. are not on the agenda.
