Elvira Surabaldiyeva expresses concerns over amendments to the Criminal Code of the Kyrgyz Republic: Will we be left without doctors?

Deputy Elvira Surabaldiyeva expressed concerns that the amendments to the Criminal Code could negatively impact the already difficult situation faced by medical workers in Kyrgyzstan.

Today, January 15, the parliament discussed in the second reading a bill concerning amendments to Article 137 of the Criminal Code of the Kyrgyz Republic "Torture." The innovations suggest that not only officials but also other employees, including medical personnel, can now be held accountable for torture in institutions.

Surabaldiyeva emphasized that medical professionals in the country are under immense pressure.

"Kyrgyzstan already lacks doctors. Graduates of KGMA are required to work for five years in state institutions. Will these changes lead to a situation where we are left without doctors?" the deputy questioned.

However, the Deputy Attorney General assures that such a threat does not exist.

"There is no such threat. If there have been cases of torture, medical workers have already been held accountable under other articles of the Criminal Code. This bill simply recognizes them as subjects of this article," he explained.
