Starting January 18, 2026, regulations on deepfakes come into effect in Kazakhstan.

Starting from January 18, 2026, new rules will come into effect in Kazakhstan that will regulate the creation and distribution of content generated by artificial intelligence, including deepfakes.

One of the key requirements is the mandatory labeling of AI-generated content. This label must be machine-readable and contain a visual or other warning about the synthetic origin of the material. These regulations apply not only to media outlets but also to all internet resources.

The responsibility for complying with these regulations lies with the owners of AI systems, as well as with users who distribute content without the appropriate labeling. The following measures are provided for violations:

administrative fines ranging from 15 to 100 MRP, depending on the status of the offender;

fines for spreading false information, which range from 20 to 100 MRP;

criminal liability, which may include a fine of up to 3,000 MRP or imprisonment for up to 3 years if the deepfake causes significant harm or poses a threat to public order.

The main goal of this law is to protect citizens from misinformation, ensure transparency in the use of AI in media, and create legal mechanisms to combat false content.
