Trump refused to support the opposition leader in Venezuela due to the Nobel Prize

Donald Trump refused to support Maria Corina Machado, the leader of the Venezuelan opposition, due to her decision to accept the Nobel Peace Prize. This was reported by the publication "Meduza," citing The Washington Post.

According to one source from the newspaper, despite Machado dedicating the award to Trump, her choice to accept the prize became for him "the greatest sin." The informant stated that if she had said, "I cannot accept this award as it belongs to Donald Trump," she could have been the president of Venezuela today.

At a press conference dedicated to the attack on Venezuela and the kidnapping of Nicolas Maduro, Trump expressed the opinion that it would be difficult for Machado to become the leader of the country. He described her as "a nice woman," but added that she has "no support and respect" among Venezuelans.
Machado's team was surprised by Trump's comments, as reported by The Washington Post, citing a person close to her circle.

Maria Corina Machado received the Nobel Peace Prize in October 2025 and called it "recognition of the struggle of all Venezuelans," noting that it would serve as an impetus for "the conquest of freedom." She dedicated the award to "the suffering Venezuelan people and President Donald Trump for his decisive support of our cause."

After Nicolas Maduro was captured by American special forces, Machado stated that the opposition was ready to take over the management of Venezuela. She proposed 74-year-old Edmundo Gonzalez Urrutia for the presidency, who was the opposition candidate in the 2024 elections.

Meanwhile, Trump noted that Venezuelan Vice President Delcy Rodriguez is ready to cooperate with the American side. Although she initially condemned the attack on Venezuela, she later called for dialogue and joint work.
Maria Corina Machado was previously a member of the Venezuelan parliament and ran for president in 2012. In 2024, she became one of the leaders of the protests against Nicolas Maduro's regime and refused to recognize the election results.
