Mass protests and riots. The State Department urges U.S. citizens to leave Iran

Against the backdrop of mass protests, internet outages, and public transport issues, the U.S. State Department strongly advises its citizens to leave Iran. The corresponding call was published on the website of the U.S. Embassy in Tehran here.

Americans are advised to consider alternative means of communication and, if possible, to exit through the borders with Armenia, Turkey, or Turkmenistan.

In case leaving the country is not possible, the State Department recommends finding safe places in their homes or other buildings, as well as having a supply of food, water, medications, and other necessary items.

For U.S. citizens with dual citizenship, it is recommended to use their Iranian passport for departure, as Iranian authorities do not recognize their American citizenship.

It is also noted that the U.S. has no diplomatic or consular relations with Iran, and the interests of the country in Tehran are represented by Switzerland.

It is known that the auxiliary diplomatic staff of the French embassy has also left Iran due to the situation with the protests.

Protests against the government in Iran have been ongoing for more than two weeks.
According to the human rights organization IHRNGO, at least 648 people have died during the protests, but the exact number of casualties has not been established due to internet outages.

Recent data shows that protests have spread to 585 locations in 186 cities (31 provinces) of Iran, and the number of detainees has exceeded 10,000.

It is worth noting that the country has been without internet for more than three days. Mass rallies began in late December 2025 in response to the economic crisis and devaluation of the national currency.
