French diplomats leave Iran: Sweden and the USA urge their citizens to leave the country immediately

Due to the sharp deterioration of security and mass protests, France has decided to evacuate part of its diplomatic personnel from Iran. According to AFP, the evacuation took place on Sunday and Monday, January 11-12. Although the exact number of evacuated staff is not disclosed, there are usually about 30 people working at the embassy in Tehran.

The French Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirmed that the embassy conducted a "reorganization of the mission to fulfill its tasks under current conditions." However, the ministry emphasizes that a complete closure of the embassy has not occurred. "The ambassador and key team members remain in place to support French citizens in Iran," the ministry added.

The United States has also urged its citizens to "immediately" leave Iran due to escalating protests. This information was posted on the website of the virtual U.S. embassy in Tehran. The message states that Americans should expect disruptions in internet connectivity and are advised to consider traveling overland to Armenia or Turkey if it is safe. Additionally, U.S. citizens were encouraged to develop an evacuation plan without relying on government assistance.

If departure is not possible, Americans are advised to find safe shelter, avoid large gatherings, and stock up on essential food and medications.

Sweden has also intensified its travel recommendations for Iran, urging all its citizens to leave the country immediately due to the worsening security situation.

  • On June 15, 2025, a similar message was posted on the virtual U.S. embassy website urging Americans to leave Iran. Later, on June 22, Washington carried out strikes on Iranian nuclear facilities.

  • Protests in Iran began in late December against the backdrop of the national currency's collapse and sharp price increases. Participants are demanding changes in the political regime. Human rights organizations report more than 500 fatalities. U.S. President Donald Trump threatened to strike Iran in response to the shooting of protesters. Today he will hold a meeting with officials to discuss possible measures against Iran. In response, the Iranian Foreign Ministry stated its readiness for military conflict with the U.S.
