Mass Protests in the U.S. Following the Killing of a Woman by ICE Officers
Protests began in Minneapolis the day after the tragedy involving Rene Good. On January 10, according to CNN, tens of thousands of demonstrators participated in these actions. Mass protests also spread to cities such as New York, Philadelphia, Los Angeles, Washington, Austin, Boston, and other major urban areas.
U.S. Secretary of Homeland Security Kirstjen Nielsen, commenting on the events in Minneapolis, stated that the actions of the ICE officer were justified. In response, Illinois Representative Robin Kelly announced her intention to initiate impeachment proceedings against the secretary and prepare three lawsuits against her.
U.S. President Donald Trump claims that Rene Good was killed after she "intentionally and cruelly" ran over an immigration officer. However, there is currently no confirmation of this version. According to media reports, a surveillance video released by the Department of Justice shows that the ICE officer opened fire when the woman's vehicle was attempting to leave the scene.
Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey expressed sharp criticism of the immigration agency, urging ICE to "get out."
He told reporters: "ICE officers are trying to portray this as an act of self-defense. Having reviewed the video, I want to say outright that this is complete nonsense."
