Kulubaev on the possible election of Kyrgyzstan to the UN Security Council: Competing with the Philippines is difficult

At a press conference held on January 15 in Bishkek, Foreign Minister Jeenbek Kulubaev discussed the chances of Kyrgyzstan becoming a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council.

Since 2022, the republic has been actively participating in the election campaign; however, as Kulubaev noted, this endeavor requires significant effort. "This is a new initiative for us, and we need to expand our connections with countries around the world, as each country has one vote. We are trying to establish dialogue and explain our position and goals," he said. According to him, it is currently impossible to predict the outcome, but all embassies are working on this task.

Kulubaev also emphasized that Kyrgyzstan faces challenges with Latin America and Africa due to the lack of diplomatic representations in these regions. In response to this, the republic has opened an embassy in Ethiopia and plans to launch a new one in Egypt this year, which will aid in diplomatic activities.

The Philippines, according to the minister, are a serious competitor, having experience in the Security Council and connections with major world powers. "Competing with them will be difficult, as they are located in a key region—South Asia. Nevertheless, we believe that small states like Kyrgyzstan should also be represented on the international stage. We will advocate for the interests of countries like ours, as well as mountainous and oceanic states. Therefore, we will continue active work with our allies," Kulubaev added.
