EU promises a unified response to Trump's threats to impose tariffs over Greenland

As reported by Euronews, the leaders of the European Union are ready to coordinate their actions in response to President Trump's recent threats to impose an additional 10% tariff on goods from eight European countries starting February 1, if Denmark does not agree to sell Greenland.

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen, French President Emmanuel Macron, and German Chancellor Friedrich Merz confirmed that the EU intends to act "in a united and coordinated manner" to protect its sovereignty.

Euronews also reminds that last summer, an agreement was signed between the EU and the US, under which tariffs on European goods increased to 15%, while tariffs on American industrial goods were lifted. These concessions were made in exchange for US involvement in issues related to Ukraine and to ensure global stability.

Antonio Costa, the President of the European Council, noted that he will coordinate the actions of EU leaders in response to current challenges.

While trade issues fall under the jurisdiction of the European Commission, the White House may target specific EU countries, selecting particular goods and industries that could be affected.

The current conflict has once again raised the question of the potential application of the anti-coercion mechanism, known as the trade "bazooka." This tool, adopted in 2023, allows the EU to restrict third countries' participation in public procurement and access to the single European market.

At the same time, protests against the US intentions to purchase Greenland are taking place in Copenhagen. A delegation from the US Congress has also arrived in the Danish capital to express their disagreement with Trump's initiatives.
