What the new cultural center will look like on the site of the burned-down ‘Chatyr-Kul’ cinema
Work has begun in Bishkek on the project for a new cultural center, which will be built on the site of the burned-down ‘Chatyr-Kul’ cinema. The preliminary design has already been prepared by the city administration.

The initiative to create the new facility comes from the municipal authorities of the capital. Currently, the Capital Construction Department of the city administration has already set up a fence and started demolition work on the site.

Local administration officials reported that discussions regarding the future of the building arose after the fire that occurred on November 5, 2025. As a result of the incident, the Mayor of Bishkek visited the scene and instructed the relevant services to take action and expedite the implementation of the new project.

To date, a sketch of the future cultural center has already been developed, and the design work is ongoing. The city administration emphasizes that the new center is intended to become a modern space for cultural events and to foster the development of the creative environment in the capital.

So far, the exact timeline for the start of construction and the estimated cost of the project are not known.

According to the "City Encyclopedia of Frunze," the ‘Chatyr-Kul’ cinema was opened in 1967 in the Botanical residential area, on Dushanbinskaya Street (now Toktonalieva Street). Over time, the cinema ceased operations, and in 2010, the building was nationalized and transferred to the state youth theater ‘Uchur’. However, a major renovation of the building was never carried out.
