Construction of underground stations is underway on Aitmatov Avenue. Here's what it looks like now (photos, videos)

On Aitmatov Avenue in Bishkek, the construction of one of the underground pedestrian crossings, which connects Akhunbaev Street and A. Masaliev Street, has been completed. Currently, work is ongoing to create four other crossings along the section from A. Masaliev Avenue to Semetey Street. What do these underground crossings look like today?

Completed Underground Crossing

The opening of the underground pedestrian crossing on Aitmatov Avenue between Akhunbaev Street and A. Masaliev Street took place, with construction starting in mid-October.
In some cases, the project required access to private plots that previously belonged to citizens.

Nevertheless, the very idea of building underground crossings raises questions. Research conducted by Peshkom and the Institute for Transport Policy and Development (ITDP) shows that even with the presence of underground and overground crossings, traffic accidents involving pedestrians continue.

As noted by Peshkom, "on roads with underground and overground crossings, drivers do not expect to see pedestrians on the roadway. However, people often choose the quickest and most convenient route to cross the road."

These crossings create only a "false sense of security." ITDP experts believe that the best alternative is safety islands and traffic lights. There is also an open question: will the authorities be able to maintain these underground crossings in proper condition after their opening?
