On January 21, the Cabinet of Ministers of the Kyrgyz Republic approved Resolution No. 17 concerning the appointment of a government body responsible for the safe storage and disposal of outdated pesticides and toxic waste.

This document has been developed to protect the health of citizens and the ecosystem of the country from the negative effects of persistent organic pollutants. It is also aimed at improving the efficiency of hazardous waste management and fulfilling commitments made under the Stockholm Convention.

According to the resolution, the Ministry of Natural Resources, Ecology, and Technical Supervision has been designated as responsible for the safe storage and disposal of outdated pesticides, as well as other waste containing toxic chemicals such as persistent organic pollutants, mercury, and lead.

The Ministry has been tasked with attracting international donors to finance the disposal of outdated pesticides and the reclamation of contaminated areas.

The implementation of this resolution will be carried out within the approved staff numbers of the Ministry of Natural Resources and at the expense of the republican budget, as well as other legal sources of funding.
