In Kyrgyzstan, the Cabinet of Ministers has decided to assign the Ministry of Natural Resources, Ecology, and Technical Supervision the responsibility for the safe handling of hazardous waste. This includes the disposal of outdated pesticides, persistent organic pollutants, as well as waste containing heavy metals such as mercury and lead. This step is aimed at protecting the health of citizens and safeguarding the environment.

This decision is part of Kyrgyzstan's efforts to fulfill international obligations arising from the Stockholm Convention on Persistent Organic Pollutants and aims to improve hazardous waste management.

Amendments have been made to Resolution No. 263, adopted on November 15, 2021, adding new powers for the Ministry of Natural Resources concerning the safe storage and disposal of toxic chemicals and waste.

Additionally, the ministry has been tasked with attracting international investments and donor funds for the work on disposing of outdated pesticides, cleaning contaminated lands, and conducting reclamation activities.

Funding for the implementation of this resolution will be provided from the ministry's budget as well as from other legal sources.

The new rules will come into effect in a week.
