Storm Warning: Avalanches and Icy Conditions Expected in the Mountain Regions of Kyrgyzstan on January 17-18
In some areas, fog is possible. Snow drifts and ice will form on the roads, and in mountainous areas, snow drifts may occur. The strengthening of the western wind may reach 15-20 m/s.
From January 17 to 19, the air temperature will drop significantly: in the Chui and Talas valleys, nighttime temperatures will drop to -9…-14°C, while daytime temperatures will be -1…-6°C. In the valley areas of Osh, Jalal-Abad, and Batken regions, nighttime temperatures will range from -2 to -7°C, and during the day from -2 to +3°C. In the foothills, nighttime temperatures will be -11…-16°C, and during the day -2…-7°C. In the Issyk-Kul basin, nighttime temperatures are expected to be -7…-12°C and daytime -4…+1°C. In the agricultural zone of Naryn region and mountainous areas, nighttime temperatures may drop to -23…-28°C, while daytime temperatures will be -9…-14°C. In high-altitude areas, nighttime temperatures are expected to be -26…-31°C, and during the day -9…-14°C; in the Suusamyr valley, nighttime temperatures will be -30…-35°C, and daytime -11…-16°C.
Such adverse weather conditions may create difficulties for the operation of communication enterprises, energy, and utility services. In case of heavy precipitation, visibility on highways will deteriorate, complicating vehicle movement.
Due to the expected precipitation, from January 16 to 18, the risk of avalanches is predicted, as well as the formation of snow drifts, snow accumulation, and ice in the mountainous areas of Kyrgyzstan and on highways:
- Bishkek—Osh (121-138 km);
- Ala-Buka—Kanysh-Kiya (68-74 km, 86-101 km);
- Krasnaya Gorka—Ak-Tash (0-3 km);
- Myrza-Ake—Kara-Kulja—Alaiku (65-110 km);
- Karakol—Enilchek (45-90 km);
- Balikchy—Kazaraman—Jalal-Abad (326-349 km).
When traveling through avalanche-prone sections of highways, it is essential to maintain a distance of at least 500 meters between vehicles.
