The Cabinet will study the potential of pumped-storage power plants
The project includes a detailed study of various aspects such as hydrology, water balances, geology, and ecology. These power plants are designed to accumulate energy generated from renewable sources, which can then be used during periods of high demand.
It is planned that by 2026-2027, results will be summarized, leading to the compilation of a registry of the most promising sites for the implementation of such projects. The Ministry of Energy, the Ministry of Nature, and the National Academy of Sciences of the Kyrgyz Republic are responsible for this task.
A pumped-storage hydropower plant is a system consisting of two reservoirs located at different elevations. It generates electricity by allowing water to flow from the upper reservoir to the lower one, passing through a turbine. Additionally, the power plant consumes electricity to pump water back to the upper reservoir using pumps. Functioning like a massive battery, the pumped-storage hydropower plant can store energy and then return it to the grid at the right moment.
