The Cabinet will develop a concept for the development of hydrogen energy in Kyrgyzstan until 2035
It is expected that the strategy will be adopted between the first quarter of 2027 and the fourth quarter of 2028.
Before its development, a scientific study will be conducted from the first quarter of 2026 to the fourth quarter of 2027, which will cover the creation of an atlas of promising sites, modeling the cost of hydrogen production, and analyzing environmental aspects.
After the strategy is approved, the Cabinet intends to develop a feasibility study for a pilot project on the production of "green" hydrogen based on renewable energy sources from the first quarter of 2028 to the fourth quarter of 2030.
Additional information:
Earlier, two approaches to hydrogen production were discussed in Kazakhstan. The first involves extracting hydrogen from natural gas through steam conversion, which is the most common and economically viable method. However, it requires the implementation of carbon capture and storage technologies to reduce the carbon footprint, which increases financial costs.
The second method is water electrolysis, which is considered a more expensive option compared to steam conversion. The hydrogen energy concept of Kazakhstan notes that the country has sufficient water resources, especially in the southern and central regions, for hydrogen production through electrolysis.
