The Iranian authorities have begun charging a fee for passage through the strategically important Strait of Hormuz. According to information provided by the British publication Lloyd’s List, a secure route has been organized, allowing tankers with permission to pass by the Iranian island of Larak.

According to Lloyd’s List, at least nine tankers have already used the new corridor, under the control of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps Navy. In one instance, the vessel operator paid about $2 million for permission to pass through the Gulf.

It is expected that the IRGC will soon present clearer rules for obtaining such permissions.

“Currently, work is underway involving government agencies and industry representatives to create a process that will allow vessels with no connections to Israel or the U.S. to obtain permission for safe passage through the Strait of Hormuz,” noted Dimitris Maniatis, CEO of the maritime security company Marisks.

At the moment, each application is considered individually.

Governments of several countries, such as India, Pakistan, Iraq, Malaysia, and China, are actively discussing vessel transit issues directly with Tehran, as reported by Lloyd’s List.
