Prime Minister of Mongolia Zandanshatar resigns

According to MiddleAsianNews, Zandanshatar Gombojav resigned during a closed meeting of the leadership of the Mongolian People's Party (MPP). This was reported by the party's Secretary General Sodbaatar Yangug.

Sodbaatar noted that the MPP meeting discussed issues related to the current socio-economic situation in the country, caused by global events, as well as questions concerning the temporary suspension of parliamentary work. As a result, the Prime Minister voluntarily decided to leave his position.

The convening of the council was a response to the boycott by the main opposition faction, the Democratic Party (DP), in the Great State Khural, which has suspended its participation in meetings since March 19 while Uchral Nyam-Osor remains the speaker. The opposition claims that Uchral, as the chairman of the ruling party, should lead the government, not the parliament.

Sodbaatar also reported that the party council accepted Zandanshatar's resignation, and this issue will be considered by the MPP faction in accordance with the legislation before being submitted for discussion by parliamentary committees and the plenary session of the Great State Khural.

The session of the Great State Khural, held on March 27, 2026, began at 20:28 and was dedicated to Zandanshatar Gombojav's request for resignation. 54.8% of the members of parliament participated in the meeting.

The majority of the Permanent Committee members approved the Prime Minister's request and decided to relieve him of his duties. It was also proposed to appoint Zandanshatar as acting Prime Minister until a new head of government is appointed.

The Chairman of the Permanent Committee on State Construction, Sandag-Ochir Tsend, presented opinions and conclusions on the discussed issue. In his report, he noted that the Prime Minister expressed the need to break the political deadlock caused by the global economic crisis, triggered by a shortage of petroleum products and rising prices.

Zandanshatar emphasized that his departure from the position of Prime Minister is motivated by the desire to eliminate the political deadlock and that he puts the interests of his country and people first.

“Youth! I am leaving the position of Prime Minister to put an end to political chaos, starting with myself. You are the future of Mongolia,” Zandanshatar addressed the younger generation.

Earlier this month, the Democratic Party announced a boycott of parliament, citing concerns about the concentration of power in the hands of the ruling party. For several months, rumors of corruption involving Justice Minister Enkhbayar Battumur, who is a close associate of Zandanshatar, have circulated, although he has not yet been charged.

In his social media statement, Zandanshatar, who has held the position of Prime Minister since June, warned of the negative impact of political conflicts on the economy and rising prices.

After the approval of his resignation, the position of Prime Minister will be taken by Uchral Nyam-Osor, who is currently the speaker of parliament.

Zandanshatar Gombojav, who became the 34th Prime Minister of Mongolia on June 13, 2025, studied economics and finance at the Irkutsk Institute of National Economy from 1987 to 1992. Before starting his political career, he worked in several banks in the country and was first elected to parliament in 2004.

From 2009 to 2012, he served as Mongolia's Minister of Foreign Affairs, and from 2020 to 2024, he headed the Great State Khural. Although he was nominated by the MPP in the parliamentary elections in June 2024, he lost in his electoral district and later headed the president's administration.
