Former South Korean President Yoon Suk-yeol Sentenced to Five Years in Prison for Obstructing Arrest

The court proceedings are related to the events of December 2024, when Yoon Suk-yeol attempted to impose martial law in the country. He justified this decision by the necessity of "fighting against pro-North Korean anti-state forces." However, the parliament revoked the imposed law just a few hours later, after which the president was impeached and subsequently arrested.

During the trial, the court also established that Yoon Suk-yeol did not comply with the legal norms required for imposing martial law.

According to the Renhap agency, prosecutors initially sought ten years in prison for the former president, but Yoon Suk-yeol did not admit his guilt.

The sentence has not yet come into legal force and can be appealed.

As noted by Renhap, eight criminal cases have been initiated against Yoon Suk-yeol related to attempts to impose martial law. The case regarding obstruction of arrest was the first for which a verdict was issued.

Additionally, Yoon Suk-yeol is also accused of attempting to usurp power, and in this case, prosecutors have requested the highest punishment — the death penalty. The verdict in this case is expected to be announced on February 19.
