The South Korean Prosecutor's Office has demanded the death penalty for former President Yoon Suk Yeol

According to information from the Yonhap agency, the prosecution of South Korea demanded the death penalty for Yoon Suk-yeol, the former president of the country, during the final court session in Seoul. He is accused of attempting a military coup in 2024.

The team of special prosecutors characterized the ex-president as the leader of the rebellion, who sought to maintain power by exercising control over the legislative and judicial branches.

Yoon Suk-yeol is accused of conspiring with the former Minister of Defense and other figures to organize a coup aimed at undermining the Constitution.

Additionally, his actions included mobilizing the army and police to block the work of the National Assembly, as well as arresting several politicians, including the Speaker of Parliament. The prosecution claims that this was how the ex-president attempted to prevent lawmakers from voting to repeal the decree on the imposition of martial law.

On December 3, 2024, Yoon Suk-yeol announced the introduction of "extraordinary martial law," citing the need to protect the Republic of Korea from "threats from North Korean communists." After 150 minutes, Parliament voted for the immediate repeal of this decree.

On December 14, lawmakers supported the impeachment of Yoon Suk-yeol, which led to his official removal from office, arrest, and subsequent legal proceedings.
