Prosecutors Demand Death Penalty for Former South Korean President Yoon Suk-yeol

Yoon Suk-yeol
A request for the death penalty was made during the final hearing at the Central District Court of Seoul. Prosecutors claim that Yoon Suk-yeol is the organizer of a rebellion aimed at maintaining power by seizing control over the judicial and legislative systems.
Yoon Suk-yeol denies all charges against him. The final court decision is expected to be announced in February.

According to Reuters, death penalty sentences have not been carried out in South Korea for several decades.

Earlier, in early December 2024, Yoon Suk-yeol declared a state of emergency, citing the need to "eliminate pro-North Korean anti-state forces." However, this state lasted only a few hours before parliament revoked it. Shortly after, lawmakers voted for the impeachment of the president, who was removed from office and arrested.
