According to the prosecution, former president Yoon Suk-yeol declared a state of emergency in the country in December 2024 without an actual threat of war, which was interpreted as an attempted coup aimed at undermining the existing authority. This was reported by BBC News, citing the "Renhap" agency.

Yoon Suk-yeol explained the introduction of martial law as a necessity to protect the country from "anti-state" opposition, which he believed was blocking the government's activities. However, a few hours later, this decision was revoked. Later, the parliament, after an unsuccessful first attempt, did initiate impeachment proceedings against the president, but the final decision on his removal was made by the Constitutional Court.

Yoon Suk-yeol rejected all accusations of rebellion, and his wife was also detained. The coup attempt led to a serious political crisis in South Korea.

In the early presidential elections held in the summer of 2025, the representative of the opposition Democratic Party, Lee Jae-myung, won.
