Measures are being strengthened in Kyrgyzstan to improve air quality and ecology

In Kyrgyzstan, measures are actively being taken to improve air quality, develop climate policy, and optimize waste management. This was reported by the press service of the Ministry of Natural Resources, Ecology, and Technical Supervision.

As part of the improvement of atmospheric air quality, the composition of the Interagency Commission was updated by the order of the Cabinet of Ministers No. 221. This commission held 10 meetings and organized field visits to the cities of Osh and Manas, where current environmental issues and possible solutions were discussed. The results of the work allowed for the identification of specific measures to reduce pollution levels.

For the purpose of international cooperation, with the assistance of the Korean International Cooperation Agency (KOICA), the project "Improving Air Quality in the Kyrgyz Republic" has been launched, with a budget of 10 million US dollars and a planned completion in 2028. A similar project is being implemented with the support of the World Bank, with a budget of 50 million dollars.

To improve climate policy, the Concept of Environmental Security was approved by Presidential Decree No. 105, and the Concept of Achieving Carbon Neutrality was approved by Cabinet Resolution No. 397. A draft National Adaptation Plan has been developed. Additionally, Coordination Council on Ecology, Climate, and "Green" Economy was established by Resolution No. 487, where the Third Nationally Determined Contribution and the National Inventory Report were approved and sent to the secretariat of the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change.

Kyrgyzstan participates in 12 international environmental conventions. The draft law on joining the Vienna Conventions on Radiation Safety has passed its third reading in the Jogorku Kenesh. Eight international agreements have been signed with countries such as Russia, Uzbekistan, Tajikistan, Korea, Japan, China, the United Kingdom, and the SCO. Currently, there are seven international projects being implemented in the fields of air quality, biodiversity, and radiation safety, and active technical and investment cooperation is being conducted with 17 countries through intergovernmental commissions.

To streamline waste management, State Enterprise "Ekooperator" was established by Resolution No. 325. Within the framework of the extended producer responsibility mechanism, over 74 million soms in recycling fees have been collected.

At the local level, competitions "Cleanest City" and "Cleanest Aiyl Aimak" are held. Nine cities and ten rural aiyl aimaks reached the finals, and the winners were provided with "Shumkar" garbage trucks, waste sorting lines, and specialized equipment.
