$60 Million to Improve Air Quality in Kyrgyzstan

The Ministry of Natural Resources, Ecology, and Technical Supervision has shared information about the measures being taken to improve air quality in the country, as well as the development of climate policy and waste management.

According to the agency's information, the updated composition of the interdepartmental commission on air quality was approved by the decree of the Cabinet of Ministers of the Kyrgyz Republic No. 221. During its work, the commission held 10 meetings and organized field meetings in the cities of Osh and Manas to discuss local issues. As a result of the meetings, important decisions and practical steps were developed to reduce air pollution.

As part of international cooperation, the project "Improving Air Quality in the Kyrgyz Republic," supported by KOICA, will be implemented for $10 million by 2028. Additionally, with the assistance of the World Bank, a project titled "Improving Air Quality" has been launched with a budget of $50 million.

Furthermore, in order to improve climate policy, the president signed decree No. 105, which approved the concept of environmental safety. A resolution of the Cabinet of Ministers No. 397 was also adopted regarding the concept of achieving carbon neutrality. In addition to these initiatives, a National Adaptation Plan is being developed.

The establishment of a coordinating council on ecology, climate, and green economy occurred in accordance with resolution No. 487. At the council meetings, the "Third Nationally Determined Contribution" and the National Inventory Report were approved and sent to the secretariat of the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change.

Kyrgyzstan actively participates in 12 international environmental conventions. The proposed bill on joining the Vienna Conventions on Radiation Safety successfully passed its third reading in the Jogorku Kenesh.

Additionally, eight international agreements have been signed with several countries, including Russia, Uzbekistan, Tajikistan, Korea, Japan, China, the United Kingdom, and the SCO.

Currently, seven international projects related to air quality, biodiversity, and radiation safety are being implemented, and technical and investment cooperation is being carried out with 17 countries within the framework of intergovernmental commissions.

In the Ministry of Natural Resources, it was also reported about the establishment of the state enterprise "Ekooperator" for effective waste management, according to resolution No. 325. Within the framework of the extended producer responsibility mechanism, more than 74 million soms have already been collected in the form of recycling fees.

At the local community level, a competition for "The Cleanest City" and "The Cleanest Aiyl Aimak" was held. Nine cities and ten rural aiyl aimaks reached the finals, and the winners were provided with "Shumkar" garbage trucks, waste sorting lines, and specialized equipment.
