The Minister of Agriculture of the Kyrgyz Republic called on the global community to include the protection of the unique high-altitude lake in the global climate agenda
At the "Sustainable Impact Forum," held as part of the World Government Summit, the Minister of Water Resources and Agriculture of Kyrgyzstan, Bakyt Torobaev, voiced alarming data about the state of Lake Issyk-Kul. Since the mid-19th century, the water level in this one of the largest high-altitude lakes in the world has dropped by almost 14 meters, leading to a loss of water volume to a critical mark of 85 billion cubic meters.
Among the main factors contributing to the ecological crisis were identified the rapid melting of glaciers, changes in the hydrological regime of rivers, and a sharp increase in water consumption in the region. Torobaev noted that the reduction in river inflow poses a serious threat to the biodiversity and tourism potential of this unique ecosystem of international significance.
Kyrgyzstan has officially called on international partners to expand cooperation in sustainable water resource management. According to the minister, the protection of Issyk-Kul should not only be a local task but also part of a global dialogue on the conservation of water ecosystems. Kyrgyzstan is ready to implement joint innovative projects to prevent ecological disaster.
