The water level in Lake Issyk-Kul has decreased by almost 14 meters - Ministry of Agriculture
According to information, Lake Issyk-Kul has lost almost 14 meters of its water level since the mid-19th century, which is equivalent to a loss of about 85 billion cubic meters of water. This statement was made by the Minister of Agriculture of Kyrgyzstan, Bakyt Torobaev, during the "Forum on Sustainable Impact" taking place at the World Government Summit in Dubai, as reported by the press service of the ministry.
Torobaev also noted that the number of rivers flowing into the lake has significantly decreased. This is related to the melting of glaciers, changes in the hydrological regime, and increased water consumption.
He emphasized the importance of Issyk-Kul as a unique ecosystem of regional significance, as well as a substantial socio-economic and natural resource for Kyrgyzstan. The decline in water levels could lead to serious ecological and socio-economic consequences, threatening biodiversity, tourism potential, and the well-being of the local population.
The minister stressed that the issues of preserving Issyk-Kul should become part of the global agenda on climate and water resources. He called on the international community to expand partnerships for sustainable water resource management and to integrate climate, water, and ecosystem issues into joint projects for the protection of unique natural sites.
Kyrgyzstan is ready to be a reliable partner in the protection of water ecosystems and the creation of a sustainable water future.
