The water level in Lake Issyk-Kul has decreased by almost 14 meters since the mid-19th century - Ministry of Agriculture
According to information presented by Bakyt Torobaev, the Minister of Agriculture of the Kyrgyz Republic, the water level in Lake Issyk-Kul has decreased by almost 14 meters since the mid-19th century, which corresponds to a reduction in the total water volume by 85 billion cubic meters. This statement was made at the "Sustainable Impact Forum" during the World Government Summit held in Dubai, according to the press service of the Ministry of Agriculture.
The Minister noted that there is also a significant decrease in the number of rivers flowing into the lake, which is due to glacier melting, changes in the hydrological regime, and increased water consumption.
Issyk-Kul, as Torobaev pointed out, represents a unique ecosystem that has important socio-economic and natural significance for Kyrgyzstan. The decrease in water level could lead to serious consequences for both the environment and the socio-economic situation, threatening biodiversity, tourism opportunities, and the well-being of the local population.
The Minister emphasized the need to include the conservation of Issyk-Kul in the global climate and water agenda. He called on the international community to expand cooperation in sustainable water resource management, integration of ecological and climate issues, and support for joint initiatives to protect unique natural sites.
Kyrgyzstan has confirmed its readiness to be a reliable partner in the protection of water ecosystems and ensuring a sustainable water future.
