According to the investigation, Kanat, posing as a representative of law enforcement agencies, blackmailed and intimidated the woman, demanding 40,000 US dollars from her. At that time, the son of the victim was in custody, and his case was at the stage of judicial proceedings. The accused threatened that if she did not comply with his demands, her son would be harmed.
In May 2024, Kanat was detained on the spot while receiving part of the demanded amount — 150,000 soms. During the search, the detainee voluntarily handed over the money.
- The Oktyabrsky District Court of Bishkek found Kanat guilty under paragraph 4 of part 2 of Article 208 of the Criminal Code of the Kyrgyz Republic ("Extortion for the purpose of obtaining property in a large amount"). He was sentenced to three years of imprisonment in a general regime correctional colony, but later probation supervision was applied for a period of one year.
- The Judicial Panel for Criminal Cases and Offenses of the Bishkek City Court reviewed the verdict, excluding probation supervision and taking Kanat into custody in the courtroom. The rest of the verdict remained unchanged.
Ultimately, the Judicial Panel of the Supreme Court amended the decision of the Bishkek City Court, determining that the term of punishment should be calculated taking into account the time spent in custody and under house arrest. The rest of the verdict remained unchanged, and the lawyer's cassation appeal was rejected.
