Medics ask to release the doctor under house arrest, detained for treatment that led to the amputation of a teenager's leg
N.B. was detained on February 18 and placed in a temporary detention facility following a complaint from citizen Z.S., who alleged a possible medical error in the actions of the doctors at the National Center for Maternal and Child Health.
Akpai Sarybaev, president of the Kyrgyz Medical Association, noted that N.B. is a family person and has no intention of hiding, so the case can be investigated without custody. "This is a complex and ambiguous case. In such situations, the decision is made not by one person, but by a group of qualified specialists who discuss all the nuances. According to our data, during two inspections, no guilt of the doctors was found, but on the third occasion, a different conclusion was reached. We urge the president to objectively consider the case and temporarily release the doctor under house arrest," Sarybaev added.
The chief physician of the National Center for Maternal and Child Health, Aina Jetibaeva, spoke about the situation with the patient. According to her, the girl, born in 2011, was hospitalized on October 11, 2024, with a diagnosis of glomerulonephritis and severe edema. From the first day, she was prescribed the necessary treatment and diagnostic procedures.
On October 14, 2024, after three days of observation, the diagnosis was confirmed: acute glomerulonephritis with nephrotic syndrome. All necessary examinations and treatments were conducted.
On October 21, 2024, an expanded council meeting took place at the National Hospital, which included a vascular surgeon, a representative from the Ministry of Health, the girl's parents, and the patient herself. At this meeting, it was decided to continue conservative treatment.
However, on November 23, a decision was made to amputate the right leg at the level of the thigh, but the girl's parents refused this procedure. On November 25, 2024, at the initiative of relatives, the girl was transferred to Turkey, where it was decided to perform an amputation of part of the lower limb.
The case was first reviewed by the State National Security Committee (GKNB) at the request of the patient's mother, S.Z.R., in July-August 2025. A repeated appeal by S.Z.R. to the Main Internal Affairs Directorate (GUVD) led to a judicial examination by the Ministry of Health conducted in September-October 2025. Both commissions issued their decisions on this case.
Since January 2026, a new comprehensive forensic medical examination of the case has been organized, initiated by the GUVD at the request of S.Z.R.'s mother.
Beremet Baryktabasova, a representative of the medical union of Kyrgyzstan, expressed regret over the pain the girl has endured. "There was no need for harsh measures, such as being detained at the workplace in handcuffs and being held in custody," she noted, adding that they plan to appeal to the Constitutional Court for the protection of the doctor's rights.
