In Kyrgyzstan, efforts to combat illegal landfills continue. This was reported by the Minister of Natural Resources, Ecology, and Technical Supervision, Mederbek Mashiev, during a meeting dedicated to issues of agricultural policy, water resources, and ecology.

According to him, an administrative-territorial reform is being implemented in the republic, which has already led to a reduction in the number of illegal landfills.

“Previously, there were 411 such landfills in the country, but after the reforms, their number has decreased to 290. For comparison, in Uzbekistan, where the population is 40 million, there are only 120 landfills operating. We are also initiating the process of consolidating landfills throughout Kyrgyzstan. In this regard, a new regulation has been prepared, which will be implemented by local authorities,” the minister noted.

Deputy Erkayim Seyitkazieva drew attention to the serious problem of the landfill in the village of Gagarin in the Issyk-Ata district.

“In the summer, it constantly burns, and the smoke from it harms local residents and the people of Kant. It is necessary to create a waste sorting enterprise in this area,” she added.

The minister also emphasized that active cooperation with international organizations is underway.

“As you know, a waste processing plant has started operating in Bishkek. We are considering the possibility of increasing its capacity so that it can process waste from the landfills in the Chui region,” Mederbek Mashiev added.
