OPEC Provides Funds for Water: 425,000 Residents of Kyrgyzstan Await Modernization

A bill concerning the ratification of a loan agreement between Kyrgyzstan and the OPEC Fund for International Development has been submitted to the upper chamber of parliament. This document is intended to support the program "Universal Access to Water Supply and Sanitation (Phase 1)," which was signed on September 23, 2025, in Bishkek.

The draft law proposes the approval of the agreement, which will allow the attraction of funds from the OPEC Fund for the modernization of water supply and sanitation infrastructure in several regions of the country.

According to the justification for the project, the goal of the initiative is to improve access to safe drinking water, enhance sanitation standards, reduce morbidity, and adapt infrastructure to climate change. The program will cover 126 settlements in the Chui, Issyk-Kul, and Osh regions, providing clean water to more than 425,000 people.

Key aspects of the project include investments in water supply systems, improvement of sanitary conditions, support for local authorities, enhancement of service quality, and preparation of project documentation for future phases.

Importantly, the financing of this program will not require additional expenditures from the republican budget and complies with current legislation.
