In order to address the shortage of irrigation water in Kyrgyzstan, a significant project is planned for implementation. Bakyt Torobaev, Deputy Minister of Water Resources, Agriculture, and Processing Industry, shared this news with journalists. According to him, successful negotiations have been completed between the country's government and the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development regarding the financing of the concrete lining of the Western branch of the Second Big Chui Canal (BChK).
The total estimated cost of this project is 37 million euros.
“Currently, losses of irrigation water in the BChK reach 50–55 percent. The use of concrete for the channel bed will significantly help reduce these losses and ensure a reliable water supply to agricultural lands. Concrete lining will also prevent water from filtering into the soil and leaking through underground layers, which will allow for the drainage of marshy lands in the lower part of the canal,” noted the minister.
This will create conditions for utilizing these areas in agricultural production, developing horticulture, as well as preparing land for residential construction and creating new settlements near existing ones.
