- According to the EDB, by 2025, international railway container transportation will reach 5.8 million TEUs.

It is estimated that this represents an increase of 23% compared to the 2021 level.

“The growth of container transportation in the Eurasian region demonstrates significant changes in the economic environment: improvements in trade and production structures, the development of logistics services, modernization of transport infrastructure, and the realization of transit potential,” emphasize EDB representatives.

The main factor contributing to the further increase in container transportation in Central Asia is China.

In particular, the implementation and commissioning of the China—Kyrgyzstan—Uzbekistan railway corridor (CKU) will have a positive impact on Kyrgyzstan and Uzbekistan.

In Kazakhstan, the growth in container transportation volumes will be driven by the expansion of TMTM capacities, modernization of railway sections, and the opening of a third railway exit to China through the new border crossing at Bakhty/Chuguchak.

EDB forecasts indicate that container traffic along international transport corridors in Central Asia could grow to 1.7 million TEUs by 2030, which is 66% more compared to 2024.
TEU is a twenty-foot equivalent unit.
