Since 2011, Alekseev has held the position of First Deputy Chief of the Main Directorate of the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Russia (formerly known as the GRU). He is considered an important figure in Russian military intelligence and was awarded the title of Hero of the Russian Federation for his participation in the military operation in Syria.
Alekseev's name has also been mentioned in Western investigations related to influence operations, including the alleged interference in the U.S. presidential elections. The motives and circumstances of the attack have not yet been officially disclosed.
