In Kyrgyzstan, an express method for saving pastures is being implemented

In the country, an original methodological manual has been developed that allows for the assessment of pasture conditions and the identification of soil degradation levels and forage quality in the shortest possible time, just 30-40 minutes. As Natalia Kilyazova, head of the pasture and feed department at the research institute under the Ministry of Agriculture, explained, this methodology is the result of collaboration between leading scientific institutions and veterinary services in Kyrgyzstan. The assessment of pasture conditions is based on key indicators such as vegetation state, stoniness level, and weed spread. This enables specialists to take prompt measures to preserve the feed base.

The first studies conducted using the new methodology showed that the famous Susamyr Valley retains its rich plant diversity; however, it faces a serious threat from the rapid spread of the bushy plant Caragana (altigana). Local livestock breeders were the first to raise the alarm about this plant, which actively invades territories and complicates the free grazing of livestock. In response to this issue, specialists have already begun to apply effective control methods: in flat areas, low-toxicity herbicides are used, allowing forage grasses to recover in one season, while in challenging zones, mechanical uprooting is employed, followed by the sowing of perennial grasses.

The ministry emphasizes that the cleaning of pastures is carried out selectively and under strict environmental control. The main goal is to stop land degradation and restore their status as a full-fledged feed base, as the spread of Caragana not only deprives livestock of food but also creates safety risks. Plans for the implementation of the new assessment methodology and the eradication of harmful shrubs will be extended throughout the republic to prevent the depletion of natural resources and support the country's livestock sector.
