Ministry of Agriculture: Suusamyr Pastures Are Experiencing Overgrazing Due to Pressure from Several Regions
According to Kilyazova, Suusamyr is a crucial pasture for regions such as Chui, Talas, Jalal-Abad, and Naryn.
“During the summer grazing season, herders come here from the Sokuluk, Moscow, Jayil, and Panfilov districts, as well as from the Talas, Jalal-Abad, and Naryn regions, including the Kochkor district. The livestock population is very large, but there is not enough pasture for it,” she noted.
Kilyazova emphasized the importance of the caragana in the ecosystem, but believes that its spread should be limited to pastures.
“Caragana should grow in places where it performs its natural function, strengthening riverbanks and preventing erosion. However, pasture diversity should prevail in pastures,” she added.
She also noted that in the past there was a systematic struggle against caragana in the pastures.
“Previously, the population would independently cut down caragana, using it for heating and making brooms. In Soviet times, large areas of pastures were cultivated, and methods of rotating plots were used, which ensured free access for livestock to grass resources,” Kilyazova said.
The specialist explained that it is impossible to completely eliminate caragana due to its powerful root system and its ability to reproduce both by seeds and roots.
“Complete destruction of caragana is impossible—it can only be controlled. If we reduce its influence mechanically or by other means, this opens access to grasses, and the animals themselves keep its growth in check,” she explained.
Kilyazova also added that pastures should be used according to their intended purpose.
