According to information provided by the Lenta.ru agency, wild blueberries have the ability to significantly improve the functioning of the cardiovascular system and intestinal health.
This conclusion was made by researchers from the University of Maine (USA) based on an analysis of more than 20 years of scientific work. The results of their study were published in the journal Critical Reviews in Food Science and Nutrition (CRFSN).
Scientists emphasize that wild blueberries contain significantly more beneficial substances compared to regular cultivated blueberries: the level of antioxidants is twice as high, fiber is 72 percent more, and anthocyanins are one-third more. These plant compounds help protect blood vessels and reduce inflammatory processes in the body.
During experiments, it was established that regular consumption of this berry contributes to reducing inflammation and improving endothelial function—the thin layer of cells lining blood vessels. The condition of the endothelium directly affects the quality of blood circulation and the likelihood of cardiovascular diseases. Wild blueberries also positively influence the composition of intestinal microbiota and metabolism.
Experts recommend consuming about half to one cup of berries per day to achieve a positive effect. Both fresh and frozen or dried berries retain their beneficial properties, as most active substances remain viable even after processing.
