The opening of the XIV Paralympic Winter Games took place in Milan and Cortina d'Ampezzo.
More than 600 athletes from 55 countries will participate in the competitions, competing for 79 medals in six winter sports. Mongolia is represented by three athletes competing in Paralympic cross-country and alpine skiing. During the opening ceremony, the Mongolian delegation marched under their flag alongside Paralympic skiers Dashdorj Tsengmid and Tserenpuntsag Biyambadorj.
A notable feature of these Games is the debut of five countries participating in the Winter Paralympic Games for the first time. Italy previously hosted this event 20 years ago in Turin, and before that, the Paralympic Games were held in Rome in 1960. Thus, Milan and Cortina d'Ampezzo have become the third cities in Italy to host the Winter Paralympic Games.
