The head of the international logistics company Kühne+Nagel, Stefan Paul, shared this information, which has been picked up by European media.
According to him, the conflict with Iran is already having a serious impact on global supply chains. Approximately 18% of cargo air transport capacity has been taken out of service due to the war. Additionally, there are disruptions in maritime freight transport.
Paul noted that the countries in the Persian Gulf region are facing a logistics crisis to a greater extent than European countries. This is explained by the high dependence of these countries on imports, especially in the food sector.
The greatest threats are to the supply of fresh vegetables and fruits, as most countries in the Persian Gulf are almost entirely dependent on the import of these goods.
Although it is theoretically possible to deliver some cargo overland from Saudi Arabia, the existing transport capacities are insufficient to compensate for the volumes of maritime supplies. Paul added that a single container ship can carry up to 20,000 containers, and replacing such a volume with ground logistics is practically impossible.
